New insights on the mode of action of calcium dobesilate presented at the ARVO 2009 annual meeting
Geneva 7th May 2009.
Today, OM Pharma presented a poster on the mode of action of calcium dobesilate - active principle of Doxium® - at the 2009 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual meeting held this year in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where around 11,000 vision researchers and practitioners gathered from around the world.
The poster presented by Dr A.F. Ambrósio showed the results of a study led by Prof. J. Cunha-Vaz from AIBILI, Coimbra, Portugal. The study showed that calcium dobesilate is able to prevent the blood-retinal barrier breakdown induced by diabetes. It restores the tight junction protein levels and distribution in retinal vessels and also decreases the leukocyte adhesion to retinal vessels.
These results are very encouraging as they show the significant effect that calcium dobesilate can have on diabetic retinopathy. The poster received extremely positive feedback at the congress.
The results of this research will also be presented in a paper that will be published in the following months in a high impact scientific journal.
