New launch of Uro-Vaxom® in Chile
June 4th, 2007

During the Annual Meeting of the Chilean Society of Urology in Santiago, our partner Laboratorios Andromaco organized a symposium on April 13th, 2007 for the launching of the bacterial immunostimulant Uro-Vaxom® in Chile. More than 200 specialists in urology and gynaecology attended this event, and in particular the high quality presentation of Prof. Claude Schulman, Head of Urology Department at Erasmus Hospital, University Clinic of Brussels (www.andromaco.cl/noticias/edicion47/fr_portada.html).

The scope of his presentation was the new therapeutic approaches in the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs), with a special focus on antibiotics and the increased resistance of bacteria towards this class of medications. Indeed, the results of a survey published in November 2006 show that in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela the resistance rates of Escherichia coli - the main bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections – against first-line orally administered antibiotics for UTIs are now as high as 54% for ampicillin and 40% for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.

This worrying finding highlights the need for other approaches, such as stimulation of the body’s own defences against UTIs for instance by the oral administration of the Escherichia coli extract Uro-Vaxom®.
