Bird flu and common sense

30.05. 2006

In a recent broadcast by Welt der Medizin (World of Medicine) on Sat1 in Austria, different medical doctors present a quite exhaustive analysis of the bird flu situation. They focus on the necessity to eliminate panic and introduce more common sense.
As there is not yet a vaccine against bird flu for humans and the effect of antiviral drugs is somewhat limited given the development of virus resistance against this drug class, the importance of stimulating the body’s non specific immune defences (different from vaccines which act specifically) is pointed out.
According to these experts, this is a characteristic of immunostimulating drugs, such as Broncho-Vaxom or Broncho-Munal, even if they have not been studied in bird flu and are not approved in that indication, as they are able to prime the immune system against infections. Of course, one should not forget that a balanced diet, physical exercise and the avoidance of stress also contribute to keeping the body in good shape.
