Broncho-Vaxom® prevents recurrent exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (CB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
July 14, 2006
This new double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted by Prof. M. Solèr et al in Switzerland and Germany shows that Broncho-Vaxom® significantly reduces by 29% (p=0.03) the mean number of acute exacerbations in CB and COPD patients with respect to placebo.
The efficacy of Broncho-Vaxom® is even more notable in patients with a history of current or past smoking (-40%, p<0.01).
The safety is also good with no serious adverse events attributed to Broncho-Vaxom® and no significant changes in the laboratory parameters.
The patient population included 273 patients (142 on the active medication and 131 on placebo) suffering from BC or mild COPD and aged 57 years (± 10 years) at the time of an acute exacerbation.
The treatment schedule was 1 capsule/day of Broncho-Vaxom® (a freeze-dried immunostimulating extract of 8 bacteria frequently responsible for respiratory infections) or placebo for the 1st month followed by a booster with three 10-day courses in months 3 to 5.
This study published in Respiration confirms the results of previous trials conducted in older patients with BC or COPD.
