New Uro-Vaxom®
study
In this 12-month double-blind,
randomized, placebo-controlled
trial * , 453 women suffering
from recurrent urinary
tract infections (UTI)
were treated for 3 months
with one capsule daily
of the lyophilized immunostimulating
Escherichia coli extract
Uro-Vaxom® (n=231)
or placebo (n=222), then
with three 10-day boosters
in months 7 to 9 and observed
for a further 3 months.
Uro-Vaxom® achieved
a significant 34% reduction
in the mean rate of UTI
episodes with respect
to placebo (0.84 vs 1.28;
p=0.0026). Of particular
interest was the contributing
effect to the treatment’s
efficacy of the 3 boosters
given in the second half
of the trial as the reduction
in the UTI rate was much
greater during that period
(- 43%).
As regards the secondary
parameters, it reduced
the total duration of
UTI, the severity of symptoms
and the need for concomitant
antibiotics and other
urinary anti-infectives.
The safety profile was
good and consistent with
that previously reported.
These results were also
presented at the last
Congress of the European
Association of Urology
(Istanbul, March 16th-19th,
2005) by Pr CC Schulman
(Department of Urology,
Erasmus Hospital, Brussels)
where they attracted great
interest as this product
constitutes a valuable
asset not only for decreasing
UTI recurrences, but also
for reducing antibiotic
prescriptions and their
accompanying risk of bacterial
resistance.
Furthermore this study
received positive comments
in Nature Clinical Practice
of Urology (2:207, 2005)
in : “Immunotherapy
reduces incidence of urinary
tract infections in women”
as well as on the specialised
US-based web site www.UroToday.com

urinary tract infections
in women” (Dr ML
Moy, 22.04.2005).
