OM PHARMA was already active in the field of infectious disease immunology when antibiotics were discovered, and has continued to broaden its expertise ever since in this complex and constantly evolving field. The result has been the development of medicines able to stimulate the body's defence mechanisms against infections. The rationale of this approach has now been fully justified by the ever-increasing number of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains.

OM PHARMA's R&D expertise is principally in microbiology: fermentation, isolation and purification processes for bacterial products, their analytical and immunopharmacological characterization, and scaling-up of bioprocesses from laboratory to industrial production.

OM PHARMA’s Research also covers a wide array of cellular biology techniques for the screening of novel immunomodulators.

Substantial know-how has recently been acquired in the synthesis of mimics of bacterial immunostimulants.
